The first inter-city bowling match took place in November 1901, when a team from the New York City Drug League met a team from the Philadelphia Drug League in home-and-home competition. The New Yorkers won.

The ABC was founded in 1895 in New York City. Local publications designated bowling alleys as a "lure of the wicked city" dens of sin which promoted the unholy trinity of booze, billiards and bowling.
